Getting Back In The Swing Of Things

Well it’s been awhile. A lot has happened in the last… 2 months. I’m happy to say that it has been extremely busy, although the effort to keep up with the blog has suffered.

The Recap:

  • Got back together with my girlfriend (so much more Pooja Time!)
  • Visited Chicago and decided I definitely do not want to move to a bigger city
  • Found an awesome place in uptown with 3 guys
  • Turned down the opportunity to move into the Creative department, but applied for a Marketing position
  • Starting really putting myself and my interests out there and established connections with new printing vendors, as well as a non-profit start up.

I feel like I could go into great length about a few topics, but I’ll keep things relatively short.

After visiting Chicago and realizing that I’m right at home here in Minneapolis, I am finding myself much more grounded, or at least attempting to be. I have so many projects that I want to accomplish. After diving into them, I realize now that I should take the time to focus on establishing one at a time.

As for a job update, I decided I did not want to be considered for the job in the creative department at work. I’m happy about my decision and now it looks like I’ll have an opportunity to do some web marketing and development in the marketing department. That in itself has become sort of a stressful, drawn out process, but I think it is going to pay off. There is a lot of overlap between the job responsibilities…

Oh and don’t forget, if you just want the cliff-notes, the recap at the top and goals at the bottom are all you need.

…and what I have been trying to teach myself. Instead of daydreaming while driving around my forklift (not in a dangerous way I swear) of the types of work I’d like to be doing or learning, I’ll actually be doing it. I think the ability to focus and keep up on the things I want to will be greatly improved by getting into a desk job.

I finallybizcard launched the Facebook page for my company, Media Mix. I decided I want to give my company more personality than just being some sort of professional service. It’s been a fun way to document all of the different print jobs and creative work I have been doing. I now have working relationships established with a few great print shops, that allows me to offer any kind of promotional printing possible. Now that things are in place with my vendors, I’m hoping I can start rolling a few leads I have into a real flourishing business. My roommate also has a connection with a professional independent print broker that I need to get in contact with.

The most recent project I’ve been working on with TurboSource Performance Parts, has really propelled creating connections with the digital graphics shops. It sounds like I’ll be doing at least one car wrap as well as a few other car decals.

thumbNot only that, but we have set up a Facebook page for the Michael Jackson Bar Crawl. I have managed to have a couple planning meetings, but the time I have been spending trying to get that marketing job has put sort of a halt on that effort. Luckily we are looking to throw the event at the end of August, so there is plenty of time to pick the project back up and get it moving.

VLLogoAaaaaand, if that all wasn’t enough, Vitality League has brought me on to help run their screen printing operation as well as consult in any aspect of their organization that I can. It’s been really amazing to be surrounded by so many people who have been putting their ambition into action.

It’s a bit early, but hopefully soon I’ll have some positive news worth sharing about a screen printing product I have been thinking about developing. I stopped by a screen printing supplier to get some feedback, and next week it is one of my goals to do some real market research at a shop. If it’s positive then I will see if I can’t seek out a company who would have an interest in manufacturing my, ‘product.’

I found a great place to live near the lakes in the Uptown Minneapolis area (pictures to come this summer). I met a graphic designer/improver acquaintance at a Halloween party this past fall. I dropped by to hang at his place one night. Fate, if you will came, into play as I was looking for a new place to live, and they were looking for a new roommate. One of the positive things about being single over the last year, is that I have managed to create a great network of talented and ambitious people. In other words, we have been having a lot of fun.

Other than that I’m happy to say I accomplished a few of the goals I made in my last post. I met with print shops and have kept my semi vegetarian diet. It’s a Hindu holiday as of yesterday, so I told my good friend I would ‘buddy system’ his 10 day no meat/no alcohol fast.

Goals for the next week:

  • Rock my final interviews/follow-ups
  • Start an exercise bootcamp I signed up for with the ladyfriend
  • Get over to my vendors shop for some market research
  • Write another blog post >.<
  • Get 100+ FB likes for my Media Mix page
  • Connect with a professional print broker

A Call To Action

Recap Jan 1-6

  • Spent New Years in Madison working on AfroBear and discovering the amazing talents of my lead guitarist/singer.
  • Interviewed for a position in the creative department and now have to wait for external interviews to take place.
  • Practiced talking to strangers. (I know, I know, you aren’t supposed to talk to strangers, but none of them had candy or sketchy vans so I think its ok)

Well, the New Year is off to a pretty good start. I spent the long weekend in Madison working on the AforBear album. It was really nice to stop in Milwaukee as well for the first time in just over a year! I’m so glad I got the chance to see old friends, especially one that has been in the Philippines for the last year and a half. I have been debating travel destinations to make use of my PTO… Suddenly a place called Mogpog is at the top of the list…

The holiday week and being out of town definitely has me trying to recalibrate. I think I’d give the week a grade of a B-. Progress made, but tipping a bit too much to the fun and disorganized side. This week I need to set some goals and develop an action plan for my projects. I have been productive, but it has been based on what I was in the mood of working on. I’m hoping the crowd of resolutioners at the gym will die down soon, I need to get back in my rhythm. If there is one thing that is a high priority, it is to get to the gym. It’s amazing how the desire to be productive accompanies a habit of getting to the gym. The hardest thing about developing a habit, is that at some one point you have to just start the behavior.

Goals/projects for the week:

  • Get to the gym daily.
  • Take more pictures for the blog.
  • Develop a timeline for the launches of Media Mix and DateNightMPLS.
  • Stick to the new vegetarian diet (Meat at most a couple meals a week).
  • Complete the Lynda.com WordPress essential training course (approx. 4 hours left).
  • Meet with the owner of a vendor/supplier to Media Mix and determine financial details of the partnership.
  • Meet with my lovely DateNightMPLS copywriter.

The Mission At Hand

“Follow our dreams, not only in word and thought
and in dream and dream, but in dream to reality and to walk
with your dream and to be your dream and live your dream
and fulfill your dream.”

- Nicholas David (3rd place winner on The Voice)

Well I’ll be damned if that isn’t the most inspirational run on sentence I have ever heard. Definitely one of the better answers someone has made when put on the spot in front of a national audience. But, the point he was trying to make is a good one, and is really what this project centers around. I have been a culprit of spending all day dreaming of what I want to do, but not putting that into action. Over the next year I am going to track my progress as I work towards my goals.

First, lets talk about where I am beginning. In 2012:

  • I ended a relationship that wasn’t going anywhere
  • Found Judaism
  • Graduated college
  • Found West Indies Caribbean Hinduism
  • Got a full time job (yay for benefits!)
  • Bought a new ride (GZ)
  • Learned to spell ‘Dinosaur’

And that is just the short of it. Starting off 2013 I am interviewing for an opportunity to join the creative department at work, as well as launch my two side projects, Media Mix and DateNightMPLS.

The big things I will do this year

  • Finish an EP for my project AfroBear
  • While I’m at it print some AfroBear shirts
  • Turn Media Mix into a multi employee company
  • Launch date night and expand it to at least one other market

Some other things I plan to do

  • Learn to Moonwalk
  • Complete a triathlon
  • Learn Hebrew
  • Learn Piano
  • Learn Drums
  • Prove Peyton Manning wrong about six packs

So how am I going to accomplish everything? None of these things are new projects, they are all things I’ve dabbled in. In the solution, comes the New Years resolution. Not just to eat more pizza, but to Focus.

12 months from now, in my attempt to bridge my dream world and reality, I hope to accomplish, entertain and inspire. Thus begins, ‘The Year Of The Pursuit.’
